Skate Maintenance

Don't forget to take the time to take care of your skates! Checking in on your roller skates once in a while keeps them safe and extends their life so you can keep rolling as long as possible.

Before You Skate

A quick check before every session keeps you safe and rolling smooth:

  • Check your toe stops — tight and secured with a skate tool.
  • Wheels shouldn't jiggle — tighten the axle nut if needed.
  • Spin a wheel — it should roll freely. Resistance? Time to clean your bearings!
  • Check laces for tears — they can rip mid-session and trip you up.
  • Make sure the insole is flat and seated properly in the boot.

While & After Skating

While you're out there:

  • Toe stops loosen as you brake — check them often, especially at the skatepark!
  • Avoid puddles — they rust your bearings fast.
  • After any upgrades or adjustments, make sure wheels don't touch the plate on turns and the kingpin clears the floor.

After your session:

  • Unlace, loosen past the hooks, pull the tongue out, and let your skates air-dry. No more funky smells!
  • Rotate toe stops side to side occasionally — they wear unevenly, so swapping keeps the grind even.

Monthly Maintenance: Bearings

Over time, dirt and grit build up in your bearings and slow you down. You want a smooth, free spin — if there's any resistance or grinding, it's time for a clean.

Watch Karli's video to see exactly how to do it. Takes about 20 minutes and makes a huge difference in how your skates feel.

Adjusting Your Trucks

As you advance, dialing in your trucks can take your skating to the next level. Looser trucks = more movement and maneuverability. Tighter = stability and control.

Watch the video below to see how it's done and what kind of difference each adjustment makes.

Still Getting Aches After Break-In?

If your skates are still uncomfortable after the break-in period, two common culprits are the cushions and the laces. Both are an easy fix — watch the videos below to see if either one solves it.
